        The answer to the question was probably not too difficult for friends from a little further south.                                                                                    

Yes, it's a magnolia seedpod.  This far north magnolias are well outnumbered by maples but, as you can see, I am collecting the makings of a magnolia grove.  

It is time to have even more beauty!
