Food for thought

I have recently been reminded of a metaphor once offered by someone speaking to me about personal relationships.

I am a chronic caretaker/pleaser and, as soon as I hear what I perceive to be a wish or a preference, I jump in to try to make it happen. I often even try to anticipate the want and move to fulfill it based on what I think is desired without even verifying that this is, in fact, what is wanted. I am then taken aback when my efforts are not more appreciated.

I was told that my actions are similar to one who takes great effort to make a beautiful roast turkey meal without taking the time and care to relect on the fact that his guest is a vegetarian. Of course my efforts are misplaced and will not achieve the hoped for reaction.

Audrey recently gave an example of why it was important first to understand and then be understood.

Very true.

Please pass the soybeans.

DCW, this post resonates with me. I relate well to that of which you speak!

It also recalls for me "the best laid plans of mice and men." Not to worry if things to awry - the intent is what matters the most.

Continue to be kind. The world needs more generosity of spirit.

I, for one, do not suffer from this affliction. My philosophy is more like, "so what are you going to do about it?"

Having been on the receiving end of your efforts, I hope I have always conveyed my appreciation. :-)

But, I get your point.
